Effects of Daylength , Different Dates of Stem Cutting Back and Root Planting on the Flowering of Chinese Bellflower , Platycodon grandiflorum DC .

Abstract
To ensure the extended flowering over a longer time period, effects of daylength and the date of root planting and cutting back of stems on the growth and flowering were studied in Chinese bellflower, a potential source of perennial cut flowers.
1. Daylength effect on the growth of Chinese bellflower was negligible, but 8- and 12- or 16hour daylength advanced the flowering by 15 and 12 days, respectively, and ended the flowering 10 and 2 days earlier than the control.
2. Number and size of flowers and length of flower stems were decreased gradually by delaying cutting back time of the main stem after May 10. Cutting back of the main stem on August 10 extended the flowering period until October and produced long flower stems which are useful for cut flowers.
3. Flowering time of plants cultivated under protected facility with double polyethylene film and planted on February 10. was hastened about 20 days compared with control plants. Flowering time was delayed until October by delaying planting time that made possible for control of flowering time.
